MochiInnovation product of mochi cake (Japanese specialty snack) with a local Malang flavor made by Industrial Engineering Universitas Brawijaya (TI-UB) student, won 1st place in DEPCOM (Developing Entrepreneur Project Competition) Entrepreneur Competition at Mulawarman University (Unmul), Samarinda, East Kalimantan.

The final presentation stage in the competition organized by the Industrial Engineering Student Association (HMTI) Unmul took place on Saturday, September 8, 2018. TI-UB was represented by the SAVIJATI Team consisting of Syavira Yopiananda (Team Leader), Debby Zalina, and Suci Septiasari with the guidance of lecturer Sri Widiyawati, ST., MT.

The SAVIJATI team brought MOCOPLE (Mochi Coffee-Apple), Coffee flavoured Mochi stuffed with Apple wrapped with Malang-Based Cultural Contents Packaging.

“We really want to raise the local culture of Malang City,” said the Team Leader of the SAVIJATI, Syafira.Mochi-2

Mochi dough is made with 3 choices of coffee variants; Robusta pujon (caramel flavor and milk flavor), robusta karlos (peanut flavor), and pringgitan arabica (pineapple-green tea aroma and taste).

For the filling the team use the Princess Noble I green apples variety. Besides being typical apple of Batu City, this type of apple also contains the highest antioxidant than other types of green apples.

“On the other hand, local coffee in Malang city is also not as famous as gayo coffee. And people are also laymen with arabica or robusta coffee because they are reluctant to try because of the bitter taste,” added a team member, Debby.

Mochi-1It is expected that MOCOPLE products will be able to increase the branding of local coffee and ultimately improve the welfare of local coffee farmers.

To produce MOCOPLE products, the team needs 5 hours. This product is claimed to last up to 3 days. MOCOPLE is sold at quite affordable prices, one box of six mochis is sold at a price of Rp25,000.

MOCOPLE is also packaged quite interestingly. It has local heritage descriptions such as temple, culture, and local dances in Malang.

“Actually we have marketing plan, but right now we still want to develop and improve the products ingredients measurement,” added another team member, Suci.

In this competition, SAIJATI team succeeded in defeating the product from a team from UIN Sunan Kalijaga Yogyakarta which finished second place and the team from the Faculty of Business Economics UB that ranked third place. (and/mic)
